Veterinary Assistant, C.A.S.

Program Purpose

The Veterinary Assistant C.A.S is designed to prepare students for an entry-level position in the field of veterinary medicine. Veterinary assistants work under the supervision of veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians to perform routine tasks associated with a veterinary hospital and animal care. The program is not a pre-veterinary program.

Program Admission

The program is a selective admission program. A program application is required. Applications received by March 1 will be given priority consideration. Applications received after March 1 will be considered, if spots are available. The program accepts students to start during the Fall Semester.

Minimum Requirements for Consideration of Admission

  • Admitted and enrolled at Pierpont Community & Technical College
  • Have a high school GPA of 2.0 or better (if applicable)
  • Consideration will be given to those students with a GPA less than 2.0, if the student has attempted less than 15 credit hours

Program Expectations

To graduate from the program, students must maintain a “C” or better in all VETA courses and maintain an overall GPA of 2.0. Students can repeat any class with a “D” or “F”. If a student fails to obtain a “C” in the repeated course, the student may be removed from the program.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Veterinary Assistant C.A.S., graduates will be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate competency in the entry level communication skills required for a veterinary assistant
  • Demonstrate competency in the entry level technical skills required for a veterinary assistant
  • Exhibit conduct that reflects the professional, ethical, and legal standards established by the field of veterinary medicine.

Opportunities

Graduates from the program can pursue career opportunities in animal hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, and universities as a veterinary assistant.
