Electronic Health Record Specialist, Advanced Skill Set

Program Purpose

The security, completeness, and accuracy of patient data are critical. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) specialist supports healthcare organizations by safely navigating patient centered health records. Some common responsibilities tied to the EHR:

  • Auditing patient records for compliance
  • Abstracting clinical information for reports
  • Processing Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Reviewing patient demographic and insurance information
  • Discussing patient information with physicians and insurance professionals

Admission Requirements

Perspective applicants should apply to Pierpont Community and Technical College for the term you want to begin the program, and have met the general admission requirements or be a current student.

  1. First-time students should select "Health Sciences: Electronic Health Record Specialist" as their educational goal on their application.
  2. Current students will need to complete a Change of Major form and select "Electronic Health Record Specialist (Advanced Skill Set)" as their requested major.

Qualified students are accepted into the program until capacity is met.

*Students can begin the program in the fall or spring semesters.

Program Requirements

Students must be able to meet the essential functions of the program and classes, with or without accommodations.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Electronic Health Record Specialist Advanced Skill Set, completers will be able to do the following:

  • Audit patient records for compliance
  • Abstract clinical information for reports
  • Process Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Review patient demographic and insurance information
  • Discuss patient information with physicians and insurance professionals

Opportunities

Completers who obtain the Electronic Health Record Specialist Advanced Skill Set are eligible to sit for the Electronic Health Records Specialist Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Notice to Students


This program alone does not qualify for financial aid. Students seeking financial aid eligible degrees may incorporate the classes as electives when their schedule allows or may declare an Associate or Certificate of Applied Science degree major of study in which the courses are embedded.
