Accreditation

Accreditation is the process whereby a professional association or nongovernmental agency grants recognition to a school or program the ability to meet predetermined established criteria or standards. Accreditation includes approval of governance, curriculum, and quality of its faculty, adequacy of facilities, library, equipment, laboratories, and assessment. To assure its stature and academic excellence, a college obtains accreditation from both regional and national agencies and professional organizations and joins certain accrediting organizations.

Pierpont’s Accreditation Status

In October 2023, Pierpont received its first full evaluation from the Higher Learning Commission as a stand-alone community college.

Upon completion of the visit, Pierpont reached an important milestone in its transition from a university college to West Virginia’s newest stand-alone community and technical college. Its accreditation was reaffirmed, and the institution received an accreditation status of ‘Accredited-On Notice.’

This status affirms the direction of Pierpont’s progress and provides valuable insights into areas where Pierpont can further strengthen as an institution. Addressing these areas, Pierpont will ensure it remains in compliance with the Higher Learning Commission’s requirements, reinforcing its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

NC-SARA

Pierpont Community and Technical College participates in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) which helps expand students’ access to educational opportunities and ensure more efficient, consistent, and effective regulation of distance education programs. NC-SARA is a multi-state reciprocity agreement for colleges and universities. Pierpont’s partnership and approval for participation allow Pierpont to offer online courses or programs across state and territorial lines across the U.S. Students with complaints about the consistency and quality of online courses and programs must first exhaust Pierpont’s institutional process for academic complaints before appealing to the SARA Portal Entity in the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. Pierpont’s procedure for appeals and academic complaints is outlined in the Procedure for Appeals section of the academic catalog, ascribing to the Board of Governor’s Policy 18.

Pierpont agrees to work with our System’s SARA Portal Entity to resolve complaints arriving from its students in SARA states and will abide by decisions of that entity regarding resolution of such complaints after all institutional processes have been exhausted.
