Pierpont Community & Technical College’s Center for Workforce Education provides a variety of non-credit short-term training courses and programs designed to provide a student with skill upgrades, certifications, and training for one or more of the following purposes: gainful employment, salary increases, and/or advancement within a company or industry.  Short-term training courses are offered based on workforce needs and can be delivered in a variety of ways including; online, instructor-led, and hybrid training. Continuing Education Courses

Continuing Education is lifelong learning beyond a degree or certificate program that ensures professionals have the latest knowledge in their fields.

WV Teaching Recertification:
In the State of West Virginia, public school teachers are required to complete 6 continuing education hours for recertification. Pierpont’s Center for Workforce Education offers a variety of online self-paced courses for teacher recertification. You can complete any course entirely from your home or office any time of the day or night. These courses meet Options 2 and/or 4 on Form 4 for West Virginia Teacher Recertification.  Continuing education Teacher Professional Development courses, designated with a course prefix of “XEDU,” are graded Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U). These classes are designed for salary increment and upgrade or for recertification only and do not count toward any degree at Pierpont Community & Technical College. A grade of “S” is awarded if the student achieves a score of 80% or greater on the final exam.  Hours vary. There is a 10:1 ratio of contact hours to CEU.  Example, 25 hours = 2.5 CEU  To register for class, please click on the link World Education. In the course catalog click on Teacher Professional Development.

Instructor-Led Short Term Courses/Programs

Aircraft Structures Technician Training:
The Aircraft Structures Technician Training prepares individuals in aircraft basics and structure technology. This course includes hands-on exercises and shop skills development in assembly tools, drilling, reaming, countersinking; aircraft assembly; aircraft production fundamentals; shop math and blueprint reading; etc.  150 hours

Federal Acquisition Management:
This course is designed with 6 segments leading to a Federal Acquisition Management Certificate.  The Federal Acquisition Regulations [FAR] provide the foundation for contract and subcontract arrangements in the federal arena. This first segment will overview the entire system and will include federal contracting terms, contractor qualifications and acquisition of commercial items. In addition, simplified acquisition (which includes all federal purchases of $150,000 or less), sealed bidding (the government process for competitive fixed-price contracts), and Federal Supply Schedule contracts will be covered. Types of contracts will be covered in-depth, with an emphasis on the risks associated with each type.  6 courses - 16 hours each course

Home Inspector Training Course:
This 80-hour course in partnership with Home Inspector Training Institute provides the knowledge and skills necessary for the certification of Home Inspectors for the state of West Virginia. With successful completion, each graduating student will have received instruction that meets Pre-Licensure Requirements of the West Virginia State Fire Commission for the Certification of Home Inspectors in the state of West Virginia.  80 hours

Microsoft Excel and Word training are available in 3 levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. Topics for each level of training are listed. Resources are available to help a student determine what level/s is best.

Real Estate Pre-licensure Program:
Pierpont C&TC is an approved training provider of pre-licensing education by the WV Real Estate Commission.  This program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to start a new career and business as a licensed real estate professional.

By the end of the course, the student will be given a general introduction to real estate as a business and as a profession that is designed to acquaint the student with the wide range of subjects and terminology necessary to practice real estate.  90 hours

Red Hat:
Apprentice Underground Miner Program (Red Hat) Pierpont’s 80-hour “new miner” course is designed to prepare students for the WV Office of Miner’s Health and Safety certification exam, which is required for a job as an entry-level underground coal miner. Trainees will be exposed to a general orientation in mining, mining health and safety, mine gases and ventilation, roof and ribs, haulage, emergency response, accident prevention and hazard recognition, and miner and operator rights and responsibilities.  80 hours

Online Courses

Autism Mentor Training Program:
The WV Autism Training Center’s Autism Mentor online training is designed to provide aides working in West Virginia public schools with the information needed to help satisfy the state requirements of Autism Mentors according to Policy 5314.01 in the state code. The course will provide 30 hours of instruction in ASD characteristics, behavior techniques, classroom strategies, social supports, and other topics relevant to helping students with ASD. It is up to the student/trainee to verify other requirements for Autism Mentorship as set by the WV Department of Education and their Local Education Authority.

Autism Mentor training is also open to teachers, professionals, parents, or other stakeholders to meet the training needs of the broader community.

An online training format is utilized with active support from an instructor from the WV Autism Training Center. Technical assistance is provided by professionals from the Pierpont Community and Technical College.  30 hours

Pierpont Community & Technical College has partnered with World Ed to provide short-term online training and personal enrichment courses. A full complement of high-quality online courses are offered in multiple career categories, including Medical Billing, and Coding, 

Customized Training

Pierpont’s Center for Workforce Education plans and delivers customized training for businesses and organizations in Pierpont’s 13 county service area ensuring employees have the knowledge and skills to perform the necessary tasks to ensure accurate work, ultimately leading to increased employee retention and morale. Customized training is designed to meet the needs of each company and the employee. Training can be conducted on a company site, at a Pierpont campus, or any location deemed appropriate and/or necessary for training delivery.  Courses listed in this catalog can also be adjusted to meet company or business needs.

Community Education Courses

Fun, affordable, and very short (less than 4hours) courses and seminars for personal enrichment, cultural interests, and educational pursuits through community education programming. Community education offerings are offered on a rotating basis, dependent on interest.  Open to all interested persons.

Test Prep Courses

Online ACT and SAT:
Our goal at Pierpont Community & Technical College is student success. When it comes to test preparation, we offer the highest quality programs and materials at a reasonable cost. We believe that ALL students should have the opportunity to achieve test scores that reflect their true potential and ability. With Pierpont’s cutting-edge Web Courses, students can increase their ACT/SAT test scores significantly.  Higher test scores can lead to acceptance into that highly competitive program a student dreams of or access to additional scholarships.   Hours vary as this is a self-paced course. 

1) Practice Makes Perfect:

Students have access to full-length ACT practice test sections. After completing the pre-test, students can review the test and understand why they answered the problem correctly or incorrectly.

2) Student-led Instruction:

Become an expert on the test by following the course outline and working on your own plan to raise your scores. From understanding the test format to learning specific tips, students will have an understanding of how they can improve their scores.

3) At Your Pace On Your Time:

Students have access to the web course 24/7. There is no excuse for you not to succeed. With 5 months of access, there is plenty of time to brush up your skills for the test.

TEAS Science Prep:
Using the Study Manual for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), this course is simply a tool to assist students in achieving their highest possible score on the science portion of the exam.  While a book is not necessary for the course, it is highly recommended that students obtain a copy of the above-stated text. SBN-13:978-1933107981.  Any version of the ATI testing manual will assist students with this program. Please keep in mind you can rent, borrow from the library, or purchase used books from the internet should you desire.  8 hours
