Textiles, Skill Set

This Skill Set is designed to expand perspectives, reveal new interests, and provide a foundation of textile knowledge beneficial across design and other disciplines interacting with fabrics.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the science within the fiber to yarn construction process

  • Classify fabrics by name, fiber, finish, color application, and method of fabrication through visual and tactile inspection and non-technical tests.

  • Analyze the production, distribution, and consumption patterns within the textile industry

  • Assess the finished material from the interrelationship among fibers, yarn structure, finishing and coloring

  • Produce swatch book of various textiles in relationship to properties, characteristics, and performance

Opportunities

A background in textile science can open doors across fashion and apparel, industrial applications, product development, testing labs, government roles, and more. Both broad and specialized opportunities exist depending on specific skills and interests.
