Program Purpose
Paralegals perform specifically delegated, substantive legal work for which a licensed attorney is responsible. Paralegals must possess a basic knowledge of substantive and procedural law and develop effective skills in interpersonal communication, organization, office management, interviewing and investigating, technology, and legal research, analysis, and writing. The Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies is designed to develop professional, entry-level competencies in each of these areas.
Student Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate the core competencies of an entry-level paralegal through meeting the following program outcomes:
- Describe the proper rule of a paralegal in the delivery of legal services. (PO-1)
- Identify ethical rules rearding expected and prohibited behaviors of persons working in the legal profession. (PO-2)
- Demonstrate a professional knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law. (PO-3)
- Analyze a problem, identify issues related to a possible solution, and synthesize and apply legal authority to the solution. (PO-4)
- Communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, in a range of context, styles, and forms, to a range of audiences. (PO-5)
- Complete routine tasks competently using software applications of the profession. (PO-6)
Opportunities
Graduates with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies qualify for an entry-level position in a law firm, corporate legal department, financial institution, government agency, insurance company, legal aid office, or other legal employer.
