Fashion Fundamentals, Skill Set

The Fashion Fundamentals, Skill Set program will not admit students for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Program Purpose

The Fashion Fundamentals Skill Set prepares students for entry-level employment in retail sales or clerk positions, where strong consumer relations, customer satisfaction, and a foundational understanding of the business of fashion are essential. 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Fashion Fundamentals Skill Set, completers will be able to do the following:

  • Apply knowledge of the consumer expectations of fashion styles or trends to assist in sales and merchandising of product.
  • Identify historical design applications in the fashion industry to assist in promotion of products and businesses.
  • Communicate with consumers and business associates details within the business of fashion and assisting in growing customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of business opportunities and practices, work ethic, and professionalism through successful store product maintenance and consumer relations in sales.

Opportunities

The purpose of this credential is to give people seeking to add the fundamentals in the professional practice of fashion and retail business to their skill sets. Upon completion, this skill set has prepared a student for entry-level retail sales or clerk employment that requires strong consumer relations and satisfaction with knowledge of the business of fashion. A clothing store job description includes processing payments, handling the return of merchandise, and providing assistance for customers to help them put together or accessorize an outfit, which requires an eye for fashion. This certificate provides a pathway to develop a new skill set or strengthen an existing one as jobs rapidly evolve due to technological and economic advancements.

  • Advanced Skill Set and Skill Set programs do not qualify for financial aid. Students seeking financial aid eligible degrees may incorporate the classes as electives when their schedule allows or may declare an associate or certificate degree in which the skill set and advanced skill set courses are embedded.
