Program Purpose

This Skill Set provides students with the basic operating principles of water treatments, power generation systems as well as mid-stream oil and gas distribution and environmental control systems.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the various impurities in water and explain their effect on process systems and components
  • Explain the typical water treatments, their purpose, and parameters monitored
  • Identify and explain furnace emissions treatments and components.
  • Read and interpret Mechanical Assembly Drawings, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams as needed to understand basic flow paths, systems operating theory and mechanical isolation of given components.
  • Draw and explain the flow path and function of typical Power Plant Water, Steam, Air and Flue Gas Systems and associated components
  • Draw and explain flow path and function of typical gas or petroleum mid-stream processing, distribution systems including separation, fractionation, compression, monitoring, storage and transport
  • Explain elementary control systems
  • Identify typical operational activities, including off normal conditions associated with the systems noted above.
  • Explain the operational aspects of the equipment and systems
  • In a lab setting, perform valve alignment, prepare a pumping system and/or a distillation system for a system start, record pressure and flow measurements, and assess the system for proper operating characteristics
  • Align valves to manipulate flow paths and isolate equipment

Opportunities

Skills that enable students to function in a power generation station or midstream processing plant as an operator are skills that are in-demand.

Energy Systems I Skill Set 5 SEM. HRS.

Notice to Students

This program alone does not qualify for financial aid. Students seeking financial aid eligible degrees may incorporate the classes as electives when their schedule allows or may declare an Associate or Certificate of Applied Science degree major of study in which the courses are embedded.
