Program Purpose
This Advanced Skill Set enables students to work on electrical circuits in the following areas:
- three phase electricity, ladder logic circuitry, relays and contactors, DC and AC motors, motor control circuits, basic motor starters, 2 and 3 wire control circuits, reversing circuits, stop and emergency stop circuits, reduced voltage applications, timing and delay circuits, troubleshooting.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Explain the theory of operation of the following:
- Circuit Breakers, Fuses, Transformers, Motors, Generators, Load Centers and Motor Control Centers
- Explain three phase circuits including;
- Wye Connections
- Delta Connections
- Line and Phase Voltages
- Measurement
- Reactive Real and Apparent Power
- Describe the various types of transformers, their construction, operating principles and input output relationships.
- Step Up, Step Down, Wye Connections, Delta Connections, Construction and Components
- Describe the various types of DC and AC Motors, their construction, operating principles, and control and protection circuitry.
- Construct and troubleshoot complex motor control circuits.
- Two Wire and 3 Wire, Reversing, Multiple Push Button, Emergency, Jogging, Braking, Reduced Voltage Applications, Solid State.
- Timing and Delay Circuits
- Relay, Dashpot, Synchronous Clock, Solid State
- Measure, monitor, and troubleshoot transformer and motor control circuit performance
Opportunities
Skills that enable students to function in a power generation station, midstream processing plant, or in a manufacturing facility as an operator or maintenance technician are skills that are in-demand.
