Program Description

The Machinist Technology/CNC Program was developed by industry experts to prepare students for entry-level careers as machinists and meet the skill demands of manufacturers.  The Machinist Technology/Computer Numeric Control A.A.S. degree will include “stackable” Skill Sets and a one-year Certificate of Applied Science.  The Associate in Applied Science degree will serve the students who currently live and work in Pierpont’s service region.  As part of the program, students earn individual certification in NIMS.

Program Specific Admission Requirements

Students must meet the general admission requirements of Pierpont Community & Technical College.  Incoming expectations include, but are not limited to, pre-requisite courses.  For example, a course may not require any specific coursework, but the course assumes students have a working knowledge of certain math concepts.

Program Outcomes

The first two semesters are designed to develop knowledge and skills in conventional machining.  Completing the coursework permits students to pursue careers using conventional machines.  Upon successful completion, the students shall be able to:

  • Demonstrate a safety attitude and conduct himself/herself in a safe way in the classroom and shop.
  • Apply mathematical skills appropriate to conventional machining.
  • Read and interpret blueprints used in the machine shop.
  • Select and use the correct measurement instruments in shop work.
  • Identify and describe the function of the shop machines.
  • Complete assigned projects in the assigned time.
  • Demonstrate appropriate improvement in skills using shop equipment.
  • Complete NIMS projects on time.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and work habits in a professional manner.

Opportunities

Graduates will be qualified to work as an entry-level manual machinist, CNC machinist, industrial sales representative, fabricator or work in an auto plant or machinist shop.

  • It is the responsibility of the student to meet with the faculty advisor to schedule all courses for the completion of this degree. Failure to seek assistance from the advisor may delay graduation.
  • The semester before graduation, the student should schedule a Graduation Evaluation through the Registrar’s Office and must also apply for graduation.
  • Students are reminded to review campus policies and procedure posted in the college catalog.
