Applied Process Technology Program Coordinator
Program Purpose
This skill set will introduce the concepts and technology of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The concepts of pressure, force, and flow rates will be applied using pumps, valves, and actuators. Circuit building, parameter measurements, and a systems view will be emphasized to develop basic troubleshooting ability.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Skill Set, completers will be able to do the following:
- Explain and apply safe work habits associated with hydraulics.
- Identify typical hydraulic and pneumatic components and explain the principles of their operation.
- Reservoir and Auxiliaries, Fluids, Pump, Compressor, Air Receiver, Dryers, Piping and Connections, Accumulators, Cylinders, Motors, Flow Meters and Pressure Gauges, Check Valves, Valves, Pressure Regulators and Relief Valves, Flow Control Valves, and Directional Control Valves.
- Describe the basic applications and operation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Explain the basic concepts, principles and laws underlying hydraulics and pneumatics (fluid and gas laws).
- Explain and apply basic methodologies for troubleshooting of hydraulic systems.
- Describe symptoms and typical causes of component failures.
- Interpret and use hydraulic and pneumatic schematics to construct/troubleshoot circuits.
- Construct, operate and troubleshoot functional hydraulic and pneumatic circuits.
- Open and Closed Circuits, Pressure and Flow Control, Cylinder Force and Speed Control, Cylinder Interaction and Sequencing, Accumulator Receiver Applications, Motor Speed, and Torque Control
Opportunities
Hydraulic and pneumatic circuits are used in many industrial applications including heavy equipment, manufacturing, and process industries. This Skill Set enables students to work in these types of industries.
