Program Purpose

The Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies with a Pre-Social Work Concentration provides the basis for the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) offered by West Virginia University. This Associate of Arts degree is part of an articulation agreement between the two institutions.

The Pre-Social Work concentration and specifically SCY 2995: Introduction to Social Work will provide the student with the comprehensive overview of the ways that social workers respond to a wide range of societal problems.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the A.A. in Liberal Studies with a Pre-Social Work Concentration, graduates will be able to do the following:

  • Meet the minimum academic qualifications for acceptance into the Social Work program at WVU

Opportunities

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to compete for admission into one of 60 slots in the Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) program at WVU. (Students will also be required to have an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher, 100 hours of documented paid or volunteer experience, a written personal statement, and a letter of reference.) A “C” or higher is required in HUMN 2200  and SCY 2995  to be accepted in the BSW program at WVU.

  • See advisor for the West Virginia University General Education Credits (GEC) for each Pierpont course.
  • WVU requires 100 hours of documented community service work PRIOR to admissions to the BSW program.
