Aviation General, Advanced Skill Set

Program Purpose

The Aviation General Advanced Skill Set Certificate provides recognition for students who have completed two semesters of coursework required for the Federal Aviation Administration - Aviation Mechanic General Knowledge Written Examination, in addition to Math and English general education academic coursework.

The Aviation General Advanced Skill Set provides 750 contact hours of fundamental aircraft maintenance training and prepares students for entry-level apprentice positions in aviation maintenance. Students who have successfully completed the two semesters of coursework that are required for the Federal Aviation Administration - Aviation Mechanic General Knowledge Written Exam, as well as Math and English general education academic coursework, are eligible for the Aviation General Advanced Skill Set.

AVMT Admission Requirements

AVMT is a limited-enrollment program. To be eligible for admission, prospective students must apply to Pierpont Community and Technical College, select the AVMT major, and attend a mandatory AVMT information session. Eligible students must register to be considered officially enrolled. Enrollment will remain open until the number of registered students reaches the program’s capacity.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Aviation General Advanced Skill Set, graduates will be able to:

  • Evaluate aircraft theory, basic aviation physics, fundamental aircraft structures, and the impact of human factors to ensure aircraft maintenance standards. 
  • Perform fundamental aircraft maintenance techniques related to sheet metal, basic electricity, reciprocal engines, and basic hand tool practices. 
  • Interpret aircraft drawings, apply aircraft ground operations and servicing practices, and demonstrate inspection concepts and techniques.
  • Apply manufacturers’ and FAA technical publications, maintenance forms and records, weight and balance documentations, and Federal Aviation regulations to aircraft maintenance. 
  • Demonstrate college-level Math and English competency relevant to technical industry standards. 

Opportunities

The Aviation General Advanced Skill Set Certificate provides opportunities for students to seek entry-level employment in areas such as aircraft maintenance apprentices, aircraft sheet metal fabricator, aircraft composites technicians, aircraft parts and stores positions, aircraft fuelers, and non-aviation related careers in the oil and gas industry, facilities maintenance, automotive industry, and other related technical trades.

  • Annual Notification: All career and technical education courses and programs are offered at Pierpont regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, or disability.
  • Advanced Skill Set and Skill Set programs do not qualify for financial aid. Students seeking financial aid eligible degrees may incorporate the classes as electives when their schedule allows or may declare an associate or certificate degree in which the skill set and advanced skill set courses are embedded.
